adviser, general jim jones. so, kim jong-un's father was in power for 17 years. and he tested nuclear weapons and he issued his fair share of threats. kim jong-un seems to be a rather new and perhaps unknown quantity. should we be taking the threat more seriously? >> well, i think when you're dealing with nuclear weapons, you have to take them seriously. and i agree with what tom donlin just said. there are a lot of reasons why dictators behave the way they do. number one, they're insecure to start with. number two is they have an internal audience they have to play to. and i would imagine that kim jong-un is playing to his military as well. and he's also playing to the south korean administration, president park, who, i think, very wisely, extended the hand of friendship and reason to north korea. so this is maybe his way of sending a couple of messages. but it's always nice, and as mr. donlin said, you can't take chances on this. >> you were still with the obama administration when the two american journalists were held captive in north korea. and of course, president clinto

for an odd couple? former nba star dennis rodman and north korean dictator kim jong-un. believe it. rodman and members of the harlem globetrotters made the trip to pyongyang this week as part of a documentary project. there was no guarantee that they would meet kim jong-un, but turns out the north korean leader was up for playing host. here is the pair sitting courtside at an exhibition basketball game which was capped off with a party at kim jong-un's palace. it gets better. it seems dennis rodman failed to brush up on his koreas before heading overseas. check out this tweet. maybe i'll run into gangnam style dude while i'm here. that, of course, is a reference to the south korean rapper psy. not surprisingly given the tense relationship between the north and the south, psy was not amused tweeting back, i'm from south, man. >>> next, you may have noticed that every time a poll comes out about congress, their favorability rating is embarrassingly low. here is the question though. who are the 9% or 10% or 12% of people who do give them a thumbs up? of thousands turned out in support of north korean leader kim jong-un's call to arms. chanting, death to the u.s. imperialists. kim said earlier that the time had come to, quote, settle accounts with the u.s. this was in response to a u.s. show of force, b-2 bombers in exercises over south korea. kim has also ordered his missiles on standby to strike the u.s., south korea, guam, even hawaii. experts doubt he has the ability to hit u.s. targets, and think it would be pretty suicidal to try. they believe a full-scale conflict is unlikely, but do worry about a more localized provocation, perhaps around disputed waters in the yellow sea. there have been several clashes there in recent years and when i visited the area friday, i found the south most vulnerable islands just ten miles from the north on a high state of alert. the big worry is that a local skirmish or miscalculation could quickly escalate. >> ian, thank you. for more on what this means for u.s. allies here's our nbc news chief foreign affairs correspondent, andrea mitchell. andrea? >> thomas, experts say that the real danger h

reported that north korea's young leader, kim jong un called on the rocket unit to strike the u.s. mainland and south korea. our correspondent is on south korea less than ten miles from the north korean coast. >> you recall those pictures the other day of kim jong un, the north korean leader, peering through field glasses and threatening to annihilate a small south korean island this is that island. it's about ten miles from the north korean mainland. in fact, kim was standing just over there on that small island when he made those threats. this place is home to 5,000 civilians. and a lot of soldiers. now, you would have thought that they would have got used to threats from the north. but even here, they've been alarmed by the frequency and the intensity of the threats that have come from pyongyang. now, the latest of course, was kim saying he was readying north korean missiles to attack u.s. bases. and today there was a mass rally in the center of pyongyang, screaming death to imperialists. and of course, supporting kim jong un. analysts believe an attack on u.s. bases is not that likely.

just had a third nuclear test, and there are many things that kim jong-un who's a new leader in north korea. everyone else is newer than he is, nonetheless, he could have issued through rodman or even by letter a very -- a more sophisticated note on how he would like to stand down on the nuclear front, stand down on some of the posturing on south korea. there are many things he could have done to make this serious. he's a pop culture guy, he's a young man. we have to ask ourselves, is he trying to do what he knows. as inadequate and silly as it sounds, maybe there's something deeper there. i don't think there is, but barack obama needs to respond to serious initiatives and not just the pop culture ones. and the leader of north korea needs to learn that. >> here's what i don't get about these diplomatic niceties. why isn't this the best time to call, after north korea has done something that we really really don't want and we really want them to stop doing it. the soviet missiles were in cuba, and so president kennedy was communicating as directly with nikita khrushchev as he could. he
